Dubai Canvas 2017 is a wonderful art festival that invites extremely talented 3D artists from around the world to showcase their talent. Fairytales on the River

The wonderful world of fairytales come to life through storytelling, interactive reading, workshops and shows. Journey through fantastical scenes throughout Riverland Dubai. Watch the story of ‘The Princess and The Frog’ unfold on a floating stage on the river – a perfect spot for this story to take place. Head to the Riviera Plaza to see the amazing puppet and marionette shows. Madam Butterfly

If you haven’t had the pleasure of witnessing live opera yet, but intend on going, you’ll be lucky to watch Madam Butterfly as your first.

It consistently makes the top 10 list of best operas ever performed. Set in 1890, against the oriental background of Japan, this is the story of a very young geisha who is arranged to be married to an American Naval Officer. Out of commitment and excitement, the beautiful geisha does all she can to be a good wife and even changes her religion for him. He leaves shortly after their wedding, and she waits patiently for his return.

Her love is strong and unwavering, and nobody can convince her to move on even years after he has not returned. When she get news of his return, she is overjoyed, but little does she know how things have changed, and neither does he.

Whether you're a first-timer to the opera or an avid fan, the story of Madame Butterfly will impress you, move you and always stay with you. Watch this ornate performance unfold through Puccini’s celebrated score, which includes the Flower Duet, the Humming Chorus and poignant aria Un Bel Dì.

Take the stairs – 1334 to be exact. This is the vertical run up 52 floors in Emirates Towers. Known as the Dubai Holding SkyRun, this gruelling race is part of the Vertical World Circuit, an international race that is also held in London, New York, Paris, Manila, Sydney, Beijing, Shanghai, Osaka and Hong Kong. Participants can choose to enter as a team or individual runners. The races start early in the morning and are complete by 10am. Don’t miss Street Nights, two of the coolest days taking place during Dubai Food Festival. A surprise celebrity chef will be making an appearance, and the largest open graffiti forum will take place, where painting and graffiti on real walls is allowed, instead of makeshift walls. But that’s not the main attraction- the real highlight will be the Regional BBoy Competition, which will draw skilled breakdancers to battle it out on the dance floor for the BBoy title. The DJ line-up includes Koshr Abz, Lect, DJ Lobito, and DJ Ciazdo. In addition to the homegrown foodtrucks and assortment of vendors, there will also be an arts ‘n crafts workshop and food-themed play area for children.

Every kimono holds a unique significance through its illustration and choice of colour. Known as dentouiro, the traditional colours of Japan all hold specific meaning. Decode the hidden meanings within these kimonos in a contemporary setting designed by architect Takeshi Murayama and designer Manabu Ozawa.

See two edgy artists with very different styles at Leila Heller Gallery. Bill Viola really pushes the envelope with his pioneering video pieces. Entitled ‘The Vast: Mirrors of the Mind,’ this latest body of work explores the fine lines between consciousness, reflection, perception and sense of self through jarring imagery and recurring use of water from previous works. Rashid Rana has been reconfiguring past classics into the contemporary future. Looking at his ‘Transliteration Series,’ one might ask the question, ‘is it deconstruction, reconstruction or disruption?’ It’s truly subjective but very purposely done by Rashid Rana who has pioneered this conceptually-driven practice.

Joshua Watts, American-born artist with more than 70 exhibitions under his belt, is also an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at Zayed University in Dubai. This virtuoso uses mixed media to distort the notions of time, and draws intrigue and interaction through creative use of objects and the way they are exhibited.

Fazza Championship for Shooting

Emirati heritage is well known for its rich traditions and spectacular sportsmanship, including shooting the saktoun gun. To identify promising talent, the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center has launched the Fazza Saktoun Rifle Shooting Championship, with entry open to men, women and juniors. Participants are provided with the training and equipment needed at Dubai Police’s shooting field in Al Ruwayyah, and the best performers will receive further training in order to participate in regional and international championships. From March 5-11, the event is open to participants from all countries, while from March 12-15 it is only open to Emirati national participants. However, anyone is welcome to attend as a spectator on all days.

Fazza Championship for Freediving

In the early days of the emirate’s history, pearl diving was a common way to earn a living. Without the help of tools or equipment, the divers had only their natural skills and abilities to descend and retrieve treasures from the bottom of the sea. The Fazza Championship for Freediving continues the tradition, as athletes and diving enthusiasts gather to watch athletes take the plunge. The competition consists of two categories- one for professional free divers and one limited to UAE and GCC nationals.


Montreux Comedy Festival in Dubai

Montreux Comedy Festival is a mixed-language English-French show that showcases comedians from around the world. Going strong since in 1989, the Swiss-founded show has toured globally with a different lineup each time. This year, Dubai audiences can look forward to two nights of laughter. Presented by Loyiso Madinga from South Africa, the English-speaking set on 15 March includes Ali Al Sayed from the UAE, Noman Hosni from Switzerland, Sebastian Marx from the USA and Mike Ward from Canada. Verino from France will host the French-speaking lineup on 16 March, which repeats Noman Hosni, Mike Ward and Sebastian Marx, with the addition of PE from Belgium.
