Racehorse California Chrome was crowned the winner of the 21st edition of the $10m Dubai World Cup on Saturday at the Meydan Racecourse.

The super horse won with a time of 2:01.83 and became the richest in history, according to reports.

The winner’s share of $6m pushed California Chrome’s earnings to $12,532,650, state news agency WAM said. This placed it will ahead of the 2008 Dubai World Cup winner Curlin ($10,501,800).

Victor Espinoza, who won the American Triple Crown last year aboard the record breaking American Pharoah, was the winning jockey.

Last year’s UAE derby winner Mubtaahij finished in second and Hopportunity finished third.

California Chrome owner Lucky Pulpit was presented with the Dhs 250,000 gold cup by Dubai Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

At the event, racegoers were presented with the the vision of UAE founding father Sheikh Zayed and later Dubai's ambitious plans through the big screens.

Proceedings were closed with a concert from American singer Janet Jackson just before midnight.
